STEVE PETERS
COUNSELLING & PSYCHOTHERAPY
Life is overwhelming at times and it can be hard to find the way forward. It might be that anxiety is stopping you from thriving in your life, relationships are problematic, you’re not fulfilled in your work, or elements of your past leave you feeling confused, sad, dissatisfied or stuck.
Talking to a therapist, someone outside your circle of family and friends who is trained to work with life’s problems, can often be a catalyst for change. It takes courage, but by facing your difficulties alongside someone who is non-judgemental, warm and fully attuned to you, you can unlock the door to a happier, more fulfilling future.
My aim is always to provide a warm, empathetic and trusting space in which you feel truly heard and able to talk about personal issues in an open and honest way. I'll work together with you to understand your challenges so that you feel the relief of sharing your difficulties in a safe and supportive relationship, where self-acceptance, change and growth become possible.
How do sessions work?
Our focus may be on earlier experiences which have shaped your way of being in the world, or it may be more effective to look at the here and now. The work can be about processing painful feelings, exploring underlying issues and finding new perspectives. Often it involves challenging outdated and self-defeating behavioural patterns, ones which may have been necessary at an earlier time in your life but which no longer serve you. Most importantly, I will be fully present and engaged with you throughout the process.
I'm an integrative counsellor, which means that I draw on different therapeutic schools of thought to best meet the unique individual needs of each person I work with. This is informed by elements of Humanistic, Psychodynamic and Behavioural theories. I have also had extensive training in Trauma therapy and offer Somatic tools when appropriate for healing the Body-Mind disconnect which trauma leaves within us. As the book title says, The Body keeps the Score.
Therapy can be short term or open-ended depending on each client’s needs, and we can discuss this along the way. I work with adults (18+) over a wide range of issues (see below).

My background
Having worked in music & theatre for many years, I have first-hand experience of some of the unique challenges of these industries, and I have a special interest in working with performers and creative artists.
I was inspired to train as a therapist after receiving invaluable help at a difficult stage of my life. Through injury I was confronted with having to give up my life as a professional musician, something which seemed unimaginable to me. Working with a counsellor gave me the opportunity to find acceptance of my loss, but also to get to know myself at a much deeper level and gain an understanding of the unconscious behaviours which had often held me back. These life experiences inspired me to train as a therapist, so that I could help others to find their own ways through their own challenges, uncertainty and change.
Some of the areas I work with include:
- Anxiety
- Low self-esteem
- Relationship problems
- Career issues
- Depression and low mood
- Trauma
- Bereavement
- Addiction/addictive behaviours
- Loss, illness and life changes
- Lack of purpose/dissatisfaction with life
- Boarding School experiences
- Stress
- Anger
- Suicidal thoughts
- Self-harm
Qualifications
I am an experienced and fully qualified therapist with a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling, a Further Diploma in Somatic Trauma Therapy, and I'm a registered member of the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy).
My learning is ongoing, as I continually work to develop and deepen my knowledge and experience through further professional training.
I also hold a BA Hons in English Literature and a Teacher’s Diploma (LTCL) from Trinity College of Music.
I have worked as a counsellor for a number of agencies and charities. Currently, alongside my private practice, I work as a bereavement counsellor, helping people who are coming to terms with grief and loss.

I offer an initial free twenty minute phone call or Zoom meeting, in which we can discuss what you’re looking for, as well as giving you an opportunity to ask any questions about how the process might work. If you feel happy to proceed, we can then arrange a first session together.
